Founded in 1935 as the first West Coast museum devoted to modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA holds more than 33,000 works of painting, sculpture, photography, media arts, architecture and design, including the celebrated Doris and Donald Fisher Collection. Anchored by Mario Botta's 1995 building at 151 Third Street in SoMa, it nearly tripled its gallery space with a 2016 Snohetta-designed expansion, making it one of the largest modern art museums in the United States, with works by Matisse, Kahlo, Warhol and Richter.
