Julie Mehretu’s HOWL, eon (I, II) at SFMOMA is a site-specific diptych flanking the Haas Jr. Atrium staircase. Two vast abstract canvases layer luminous paint and ink over distorted digital images of protests and nineteenth-century American West depictions. Themes of colonial expansion, landscape as struggle, and abstraction as historical force structure the freely accessible commission.
