The Lab
Founded in 1984, The Lab is one of San Francisco’s most influential nonprofit experimental art spaces. Located in the historic Redstone Building in the Mission District, it commissions and presents ambitious work across visual art, performance, music, film, installation, and interdisciplinary practice. The organization is known for supporting artists working at the edges of contemporary culture, often providing substantial production support through long-term residencies and commissions. Over four decades, The Lab has exhibited and presented artists including Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, David Wojnarowicz, Barry McGee, Kim Gordon, and Kathleen Hanna. Its exhibitions and performances have made it a cornerstone of San Francisco’s experimental arts community and a catalyst for new artistic ideas.
