The first group exhibition in The Lab's three-year series the compost pile, this exhibition challenges the way we think about boundaries through four major works by Bay Area artists assessing correspondences between species, scale, microbes, the living and the dead, life and non-life. Taking its name from the composting practice of balancing wet nitrogen-rich matter with dry carbon-containing material, the works explore the collaborative balancing act between human and non-human agents. Bill Basquin's Scent Posts draws on naturalist Farley Mowat's territory-marking practices; Whitney Vangrin's Sour Coil merges fermentation with kelp restoration; Kevin Corcoran's Ground Figures assembles field recordings from eroding Mussel Rock; and Anna Friz's Hole in the Wall creates a portal into the underworld.
