A museum dedicated to the art, history, and natural science of California, formed in 1969 by merging three Oakland institutions and housed in a landmark tiered modernist building with terraced roof gardens by Kevin Roche near Lake Merritt at 1000 Oak Street. Its collection of more than 1.8 million objects includes Bay Area figurative painting, Dorothea Lange's photography archive, California crafts, and Gold Rush artifacts. Known for community-centered programming, including popular Friday Nights events, OMCA remains Oakland's flagship museum.
