Screens Series: Umi Ishihara presents three recent films by the London- and Tokyo-based artist: Gravity and Radiance (2021), Thundergod (2024), and Nocturnal Melody (2026). Mixing fiction and documentary, often with non-professional actors and local residents, the films draw on personal memory and Japan’s underground nightlife. They explore precarity, desire, belonging, and communities outside dominant social structures.
