Built from luminous layers of oil paint, his nocturnal scenes depict anonymous figures caught in gestures that could suggest either embrace or struggle. Drawing from film, literature, poetry, and Baroque painting, Xie creates ambiguous images that blur tenderness and violence, intimacy and power.
