Allora & Calzadilla’s *Unspecified Promise* (2017) is a sculpture in ICA Miami’s Sculpture Garden. More than thirty tons of polished black granite stand against half of a 1993 Caterpillar loader backhoe, the stone’s mirror finish reflecting the machine’s missing half. The duo reworks the granite monument to explore how U.S. policy has shaped Puerto Rico, Cuba and their diaspora, many of whom live in Miami.
