Lava Thomas is a Los Angeles-born, Bay Area-based artist who lives and works in Berkeley. She makes large-scale drawings, portraits, monuments, and installations that draw on civic, family, and historical archives. Her series Mugshot Portraits: Women of the Montgomery Bus Boycott presents graphite and Conté pencil portraits of women arrested during the 1955–56 boycott.
