John Baldessari (1931–2020) was a pioneer of American conceptual art. Based in Los Angeles, he rejected traditional boundaries and expanded what art could be, becoming one of the best-known artists of his time and shaping generations of artists from David Salle and Jack Goldstein to Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger. His work grappled with the clichés that shape how art is seen.
