Henri Matisse (1869–1954), born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, was a leading figure of modern art. He led the Fauves with expressive, non-naturalistic color, and across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking pursued color and line as sources of order and joy. In his final years he developed his celebrated paper cut-outs, made from gouache-painted paper.
