Lower East Side: Three Perrotins and a Photo Museum

Hugo Toro: Ojo de Agua presents new paintings in which water serves as the primary source of inspiration — painted in melancholic shades that reflect light, memory, and emotion. Born in France to a Mexican mother and a French father, Toro navigates the space between reality and imagination through landscapes that are psychological mappings rather than depictions. Mangroves with semi-aquatic, shifting roots recur as metaphors for a fluid heritage — a Mexico he never lived in yet carries as a powerful phantom through his mother's storytelling and the mythologies of his ancestral village in Oaxaca. Where words fail, thick, composite pigments succeed: the language of roots made material.

Since 2024, photographer and ICP alum Andrea Hernández Briceño has collaborated with the Indigenous Huöttöja people of the Amazon basin to document their traditions and ancestral knowledge. Developed through a long-term relationship with the community, her photographs reflect the Huöttöja worldview, emphasizing humanity’s deep connection to nature while exploring the cultural pressures posed by the expanding mining industry.

Leonel Vásquez: Como Volverse Caudal (How to Become a Stream) creates a water temple in the gallery using water collected from the Mahicannituck River — the Hudson — whose tidal waters move in both directions, mixing freshwater with Atlantic saltwater and bearing decades of PCB contamination. Two cast aluminum bowls rotate to match the river's current velocity, activating sympathetic strings through water pressure; a copper sculpture drips water onto a kalimba; nine rotating river stones are amplified through analog mechanical systems. Together the instruments make the river audible, proposing deep listening as a way of understanding our relationship to the earth and the environmental residue we leave behind.

time is a flat circle is the second collaboration between Rip Space and bitforms gallery, bringing together work by Erick Antonio Benitez, Ricardo Cabret, Lou Fauroux, and Umber Majeed. The exhibition considers how contemporary mythology is constructed and transformed across digital images and networked systems. For those navigating diaspora and cross-cultural identity, the past remains active in the present—home exists in multiple places at once, and inherited memory coexists with contemporary life.

Never Lose Sight is a deeply personal body of work that serves as a literal and metaphorical testament to human resilience. The title reflects a harrowing and transformative period in the artist's life: Chris recently faced the terrifying reality of losing his eyesight. Instead of allowing the diagnosis to dim his creative output, he channeled the experience directly into his studio practice. The resulting collection is a powerful celebration of perseverance, proving that true vision comes from within and that happiness is a choice forged through adversity. A group exhibition (June 6-July 25, 2026) curated by Toronto-born gallerist Hannah Traore as an ode to her hometown, gathering sixteen artists who live and work in the city, including Kent Monkman, June Clark, Sandra Brewster, Jorian Charlton, and Isabel Okoro. Spanning photography, painting, sculpture, and video, the works consider place as an extension of identity and explore overlooked histories, forging dialogue between Toronto and New York.
