A modern and contemporary art museum founded in 1969 by local artists as the Civic Art Gallery and renamed in 1974, occupying a landmark 1892 Romanesque former post office (plus a 1991 wing) on the Circle of Palms beside Plaza de Cesar Chavez in downtown San Jose. Its collection of more than 2,600 works emphasizes 20th- and 21st-century West Coast artists and art of the Pacific Rim, with strengths in new media reflecting Silicon Valley. In 2025 it opened its first dedicated permanent-collection galleries, 'Tending and Dreaming.'
