In celebration of Asia Week New York 2026, this exhibition centers on two of Yoshio Okada’s most innovative series—Celestial Phenomena and Jellyfish, which marry time-honored craft with contemporary sensibility. Complementing these are folding screens and hanging scrolls from the Taisho era (1912-26) and early Showa era (1926-1989), a period of great change for Japan and its arts. Painters of this time shifted toward naturalism, incorporated foreign influences, and explored new materials while remaining focused on traditional themes.
