Bridget Mullen’s Who Needs Muscles If Nothing Is Heavy? is her fourth solo at Nazarian / Curcio, extending paintings that begin as abstract marks and tip into bodies. Decisive lines, layered color, and stuttering pigment stage figures between density and open space, compression and elastic expanse. Abstraction and representation remain complementary halves of an enigmatic whole.

Bridget Mullen (b. 1976, Winona, MN; lives in the Hudson Valley) builds psychedelic paintings that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. Starting from abstract marks and layered color, forms tip into bodies—eyes, hair, limbs—through decisive yet intuitive decisions. MFA, MassArt; residencies at MacDowell, Skowhegan, and Headlands; solos at Nazarian/Curcio, Nathalie Karg, and Annet Gelink.
