*Utamaro: Elements of Beauty* gathers more than 40 woodblock prints by Kitagawa Utamaro from the museum’s collection. His portraits of courtesans, geisha and ordinary women of 1790s Edo use dramatic close-ups that hint at inner lives, along with layered, sheer fashions and scenes of women at work or at home. Illustrated books show the height of Japanese woodblock printing.
