Roy DeCarava’s *the sound i saw*, curated by Ebony L. Haynes at David Zwirner Los Angeles, gathers photographs from the late 1940s through the 1960s. Tonally rich silver gelatin images pair New York street life with jazz musicians mid-set and at rest. First an artist’s book and later shown at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the series treats seeing and listening as intertwined; a listening room draws on DeCarava’s playlists.
