Gitterman Gallery presents an exhibition of Ruth Thorne-Thomsen's vintage gelatin silver prints spanning several decades of the artist's practice. Working with a pinhole aperture, Thorne-Thomsen staged photographic constructions within actual landscapes, creating seamless surreal scenes that allude to mythology, dreams, and the collective unconscious. Series ranging from Expeditions — evoking 19th-century photographs of Egyptian ruins — to Songs of the Sea and Views from the Shoreline draw on Jungian symbolism, Greek mythology, and Renaissance portraiture to suggest truths embedded in human experience since early civilization.
