Nina Sobell: Proximity Effects surveys six decades of Sobell's pioneering exploration of brainwaves as artistic medium, from BrainWave Drawings in 1974 to the newest version of GammaTime in 2026. In GammaTime, four participants wearing EEG headsets observe a projected audio-visualization of their collective brain activity, discrete shapes merging into unified wholes as inter-brain synchrony is achieved through watching, listening, and physical proximity. Spanning closed-circuit video, personal computers, and early internet connectivity, the exhibition traces how Sobell consistently adapts neurotechnology to construct what she understands as social sculpture — the audiovisual imagery not the final product but the means through which participants are brought into connection with the artist and each other.
