Larrakitj, or memorial poles, are visually striking, hollow, free-standing forms from Australia’s north, historically serving as ossuaries for high-ranking individuals. Decorated with clan designs, they protected spirits and marked specific locations. Once confined to mortuary practices, these poles now hold a broader cultural and artistic role. This exhibition presents works by significant past and contemporary artists from north-east Arnhem Land, reflecting deep traditions and evolving expressions.
