Matthias Kaiser’s "United States of Matter" is the Vienna-based ceramicist’s first Miami solo show, gathering varied functional vessels made from hand-harvested clays. Grains of quartz and iron ore are left in rather than filtered out, and surfaces range from sanded engobes to plant-ash glazes and metallic lusters. Informed by apprenticeships in Japan, the work treats clay as a collaborator and invites slow looking.
