Nonaka Hill Los Angeles presents an exhibition of Kenzi Shiokava's small-scale sculptures, the second project since the gallery began working with the artist's estate. The exhibition focuses on Shiokava's "box works," fashioned from cast-off crates, file boxes, and drawers containing meticulously arranged rocks, shells, and toy figurines. Some works are organized in categorical style reminiscent of specimen boxes, while others function as playful theatrical dioramas. Each piece operates as a miniature world, theatrical tableau, and unsolvable Dada-ist puzzle. The exhibition coincides with a comprehensive career survey opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
