Hiroka Yamashita paints white vapors—mist, steam, incense smoke, blizzard—as presences that both conceal and reveal. Her new exhibition brings together eighteen canvases exploring Shinto ritual dances and classical Japanese landscapes, territories she has inhabited since 2024 through direct participation in local ceremonies and festivals. Drawing on deep reserves of Japanese mythology and animism, Yamashita constructs bold compositions that echo ukiyo-e woodblock prints, introducing vivid reds and heavy blacks alongside whites traditionally associated with the divine.
