Hard Line Women brings together twelve Japanese women artists, from Sumie Aoki and Tomie Ohtake to Atsuko Tanaka, Rei Kawakubo and Kazuko Miyamoto, who each pursued a singular hard-edged abstraction from the 1960s to today. Paintings, brass and steel sculptures and small paper constructions favor geometry and cool formal order over masculine grandiosity, alongside pivotal moments in the global women’s movement.
