"Free and Queer: Black Californian Roots of Gay Liberation" gives Black queer culture in California, and especially Los Angeles, its place in the decades-long fight for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition. Through photographs, film, vintage newspapers and archival objects, it recovers a history largely left out of the record, introducing the sites, protagonists and allies who shaped struggles for democracy and free expression.
