In Fool's Gold, Reemtsen's signature female figures appear dressed in gold. Not metallic paint, but layered color constructing the illusion of reflective surfaces, a painterly sleight of hand. Bathed in neon pink and green light, the women wield powerful tools traditionally reserved for men. The exhibition includes oil paintings on panel alongside three unique screenprints finished with gold leaf and hand-collaged elements. Pyrite, a mineral that’s beautiful, deceptive, and long mistaken for something precious, points to the exhibition’s central tension: appearances can deceive.
