DEVIATIONS gathers 12 interconnected artists—many trans, gay, or part of a non-geographic “downtown”—in a show of portraits and sculptures that form a web of mutual representation. These works explore how objects hold meaning, both in the unconscious and in physical form. Interpersonal portrayals complicate subject/object boundaries, raising questions of recognition, perception, and presence. What does it mean to see—and be seen—when the gaze passes between image and maker?
