Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was an influential American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer whose work documented race, poverty, civil rights, and everyday life. As the first Black staff photographer at "Life" magazine, he created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images. Parks later became a pioneering Hollywood director, best known for "Shaft" (1971).
