Anton Kern Gallery presents As Above, So Below, Matthew Monahan’s latest exhibition of sculptural reliefs and large-scale works on paper. Exploring the tension between surface and form, Monahan lets shadow and light animate his figures, which emerge partially obscured from textured grounds. Freed from enclosure, his forms explore physical and psychological struggle, where figuration becomes a site of transformation, hovering between image and object, clarity and concealment.
