Anh Vo: Song and Sex: Before the Revolution culminates a year-long apprenticeship with two master-musicians specializing in Ca Trù — a dying form of northern Vietnamese chamber music built on intricate poetic meters and the interplay of voice, drum, and lute, condemned and effectively banned by the Communist government for its associations with prostitution and opium culture. The exhibition unfolds in tandem with weekly performances in the gallery, each a distinctive attempt at resurrection invoked by an ever-evolving cast of artists, dancers, and musicians. Curated by Alhena Katsof, it marks Vo's first solo exhibition in New York.
