Thomas Ruff (b. 1958) rose to prominence in the late 1980s as part of the Düsseldorf School of photographers who studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher. Breaking from his teachers, he developed a conceptual approach using color, manipulated source images and prints enlarged to the scale of painting. Working in discrete series, he explores the “grammar of photography,” and his work has been shown at K20 Düsseldorf and the V&A.
