Miguel Ferrando (1957–1996) was born in Santo Domingo and moved to New York at five, returning often to the Dominican Republic. He studied at Cooper Union, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and Escuela de Bellas Artes with Guillo Pérez. Based in the Lower East Side and active in the queer downtown scene—including drag at the Pyramid Club—he worked in a circle with Darrel Ellis, Allen Frame, Malcolm Morley, and Ann Wilson. His career was cut short by AIDS-related illness at thirty-eight; recent shows at CANDICE MADEY and EMBAJADA have revived attention to his works on paper.
