David Smith (1906–1965) is the sculptor most closely associated with Abstract Expressionism. Trained as a painter at the Art Students League in New York, he learned metalwork on automobile and locomotive factory floors and became the first known American artist to weld steel into sculpture. Over a 33-year career he also drew and painted, making his Sprays with commercial spray enamel.
