Carl Cheng (b. 1942, San Francisco; lives in Santa Monica) is a central figure in Southern California art. Beginning in the 1960s amid political unrest, artistic experimentation, and the aerospace boom, he has made ephemeral, process-based works at the intersection of identity, technology, and ecology, expanding the histories of post-minimalism, systems art, environmental art, and social practice.
