Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966), born in Borgonovo, Switzerland, was a sculptor, painter and draftsman who worked mainly in Paris. After an early Surrealist phase, he became known for gaunt, elongated standing and walking figures in bronze, and for intense portraits, works that probe perception, distance and the fragility of the human presence.
